Will took Homer and moved away but still kept in a one sided contact with Hannibal, sending him small letters and post cards and report cards of Homer but never responded to any letters Hannibal sends and refuses to send any photos of growing Homer, for safety reasons but also a vague way of punishing Hannibal, maybe even torturing him.
Maybe Hannibal tries a number of different ways to track them both down, bribing guards, asking for the phone and dialing operator, but they always fail or will moves he and the babe quickly.
Hannibal has to live everyday knowing his baby is growing up and living his life without knowing anything about his murdering monster of a father. While Hannibal just paces a small cell. Maybe he tries drawing him from memory, just to see his face one more time, draw him older, younger, try and figure out what he looks like now.
Mostly Hannibal just appreciates the information in the letters, holding it close to himself, maybe Chilton takes them away sometimes or reads them out loud to humiliate him.
Sometimes Hannibal responds to Will in angry threats, and then sometimes crying pleas, desperate for just one small photo. Will reads these letters and just burns them.
When Homer reads about Clarice he doesn’t call. HE VISITS. The room Hannibal is brought to for visiting is separated by a sliding cover over glass and when it pulls back Hannibal instantly recognizes the small face, the wild curls and blue green eyes. For a flash of a moment he thinks it’s Will but his mind catches up with him. His 17 year old son, Homer, all long limbs and small posture, faint freckles and beauty marks over flushed skin like his father, anger and tears in his young eyes. Hannibal almost laughs, it doesn’t compare to any of his drawings.
“I just wanted to see you for myself.”
one of those young boyish cracks in his voice
“Why…”
Homer is thrown back at the lost memory of Hannibal’s thick accent. He had forgotten his voice.
“I needed to prove you were real.”
How dare you…
