On the potentially erotic nature of the relationship between Will and Hannibal
THANK YOU!
can we talk for a second about hugh’s answer.
- in stating he “doesn’t personally believe” he’s noting that it its his own opinion and doesn’t necessarily have any bearing on the characters actual development or relationship.
- he specifically criticized the prospect for a “romantic item” rather than a sexual coupling because he won’t assume the two characters sexual identities and focuses rather on the emotional / romantic aspects of hannigram, something that can be picked at because their emotional relationship is discussed in the storyline and never the sexual.
- and fuller brings this ideology home, separating the two and understanding WE DO THE SAME THING we understand romanticising a couple is an exploration of of characterization and little meta conversations while the sexualization is just that, SEX (happy go fun time for fannibals)
- “not taking it away from us” is one of the greatest things i think any person a part of a television series with a collective fandom has ever said because he’s relinquishing ownership of the characters and story to those that enjoy it, he’s acknowledging it isn’t something that can be possessed, we all share it, we all love it.
- i think mads does the same thing but his english fucks with him so he just goes “probs gay”
none of this is an argument towards the prospect of canon hannigram i just really love our super intelligent and respectful cast and crew and i wanted to squish over them 😀
some more awesome things about Hugh’s answer!
- like you said, Hugh never says anything in relation to Will or Hannibal’s sexuality to discredit the ship, i.e. ‘they’re just not wired that way’ or otherwise coming to the quick hetero defense of ‘hey no he’s straight stop that ew’
- Hugh emphases the fact that it is the way that Hannibal treats Will rather than anything else that makes him not see them as a ‘romantic item’. This actually probably has more depth than we think it does because not only is it Hugh’s job as his actor and representative to defend Will but it’s natural that anybody would not want to advocate that kind of abusive relationship in a good light. Now i’m going to drop some pop-culture history on you: Hugh doesn’t know how we ship this and his ‘in’ on that kind of relationship is going to be in Hannibal (the novel) where Clarice falls in love with Hannibal and they run off as specifically a ‘romantic item’ to some beach. The ending is extremely controversial as it’s essentially apologetic to this deeply flawed abusive relationship between an evil serial killer and who was once his prey. Jodie Foster straight out flamed this ending and refused to do the sequel to Silence, stating it was an awful disservice to the character. Anyone who isn’t a part of the fandom is going to first jump to this same controversy when talking about a romantic relationship between Hannibal and their character, it’s kind of the stigma that follows the project since the novel’s release. Hugh not wanting that for his character is completely understandable. Bear in mind that ‘That’ does not automatically equate to any romantic relationship between Hannibal and Will. Obviously how a lot of fans ship it (and i’m including Bryan, oh captain my captain) isn’t going to be anything like ‘That’.
But Hugh really really does ship it, as hard as Mads even!:
- Hugh doesn’t talk about Hannibal if he doesn’t get to talk about how much the relationship between Hannibal and Will means to him. Mads and Hugh talk a lot about their characters together and it’s very obvious to me that they’re on the same page with them. Sure when Mads talks he’s straight up shouting ‘gaaayyyyy’ at every pause (it’s like the exact opposite of ‘no homo’ with him it’s fantastic) but that’s, well, Mads. And it’s actually mostly in english interviews that he’s so short and straight to the point. With Hugh it starts with that manic gleam in his eye that anyone involved with shipping characters can recognize and goes on into typical otp jargon like: THEY’RE THE ONLY ONES WHO UNDERSTAND EACH OTHER OMG DO U UNDERSTAND THEY’RE EVERYTHING TO ME DON’T U DARE SAY THEY’RE NOT CANON. Just more english gentleman-like. Hugh is quite insistent in that it’s Will and Hannibal’s relationship that makes the show for him, that their investment in each other is as strong as his is and while he may not advocate a ‘romantic item’ type of relationship (and btw I’ve come to believe he’s used those specific words because he couldn’t find another term to describe what he believes is a happy and healthy relationship interpretation of hannibalwill), he does certainly recognize and advocates the obvious romantic tones of the relationship, quickly agreeing when Bryan explains it better after his answer.
- proFOUND CONNECTION. HE FUCKING USED ‘PROFOUND CONNECTION’ TO DESCRIBE HANNIBALWILL LIKE ARE YOU FUCKING SRS RIGHT NOW WHY IS NO ONE ELSE FREAKING OUT ABOUT THIS, MY DEANCASBROS KNOW WHERE IT’S AT. WHAT’S A SYNONYM FOR CONNECTION? BOND.
PROFOUND BOND BITCHES.THAT’S OTP TALK RIGHT THERE LET ME TELL YA- other than talking about foils and profound connections and attraction, Hugh’s favorite buzz word for hannibalwill is ‘intimate’. Some things Hugh says about hannibalwill: ‘They’re so intimate with each other, they’re so attracted to each other, they’re each other’s foils, they need each other to understand one another, they were so alone before they met each other it’s twu luv’ (like no srsly he said this in an interview describing them like a fucking romcom, two star-crossed lovers finally meeting, it fucking kills me)
- Which brings me to my favorite part of this panel where Hugh alludes to the fact that there was so much attraction and intimacy between their characters that they were very much on their way to having a more normal romantic relationship until Hannibal keeps the whole encephalitis problem a secret from Will. Because that kind of thing usually keeps people from hitting third base.
- Basically Hugh definitely acknowledges the homoerotic/romantic tones of the relationship, is on bored with it even, but is understandably wary of oversimplifying it or portraying an abusive relationship as a good thing and wants to keep the emphasis on the non-sexual aspects of the relationship most likely for fear of ending up with the same faults of the novels.
TL;DR: HUGH DANCY SHIPS IT AS HARD AS MADS OR YOU (but not as much as Bryan because no one can ship it harder than Bryan)
a direct quote from brian in an interview you cant make this shit up
ALSO it’s very important to really understand when mads speaks english he takes long pauses, fumbles just slightly on conveying his opinion and really really thinks about his answer, not because he has problems with english, he’s very fluent and i can always understand him but because when you’re trying to express emotion or opinion in a second language it’s very worrisome that you may accidently express a word in the wrong context, in relation to societal or cultural understanding
like, wow this ice is very cool
is the ice cool as in what an awesome cube of ice?
or is he trying to say it’s too cold for his sensitive teeth??
and when speaking danish he’s so relaxed and his thoughts are fluid, he just looks comfortable and more confident in his responses (plus that danish is sexy as fuk)
just a note on interpreting mads in interviews, i always keep this in mind, he’s super linguistic and knows so many languages i’m surprised he hasn’t forgotten how to talk in the middle of an interview lol
I s2g every hannibal fan needs to read this.
